説明 | A nice shot of the Halls of the Ancients on the SW corner of New York Avenue and Thirteenth Street, NW, 5/26/07 "Washington Times".The Hall held the collection of antiquities and reproductions of antiquities of hardware-salesman-turned- impresario Franklin Webster Smith. Built ca. 1877, it had originally housed a roller rink and appears to have been razed ca. 1916 to make way for the Capital Garage, which was itself demolished in 1974.Smith published several illustrated prospectuses for much more elaborate versions of the Hall, which he intended to serve as national gallery of art and culture. He never got further than this building, however.Interestingly, the site was also occupied by a garage when this photo was taken - the Reed Brothers, an auto repair company, had just christened the building the Central Garage. |
