説明 In the mid 1800’s Samuel Coe, knowing that his property was rich in natural resources, granted permission for the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad to develop a railroad through his isolated land at no cost to them. In return, he had an economical means to ship his coal and rich clay to buyers. In 1856 the town of Moonville Ohio began its existence as a coal and clay mining town. At its peak, the largest number of residents recorded living in the area was about one hundred mining employees and family members during the mid to late 1800’s. Moonville Tunnel was built as part of the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad whose tracks crossed Vinton County. In 1883, the railway would change ownership to the Baltimore and Ohio. Over the succeeding decades, the community declined, especially during the early 1900s as coal deposits were no longer available. In 1947 the only family left in Moonville moved away, making the community a ghost town. Today, only the foundation of the old schoolhouse, the tunnel, and the community cemetery remain. Despite being abandoned in the 1940s, Moonville remains well known, principally due to purported ghost sightings. The most famous Moonville ghost story is that of a railroad worker who was struck by a train in the tunnel in the 1920s. Numerous people have claimed to see this ghost, waving a red lantern, hoping to signal the oncoming train to stop. Another rumored ghost is that of a brakeman who was decapitated after falling onto the tracks while riding on the train through Moonville. A third ghost is reported to be that of a young woman wearing a wedding dress, who was supposedly struck by a train during the first decade of the 1900s while looking for her fiance, who was a railroad worker.
