| 説明 | New Hartford Garden Club’s _SPROUTS Youth DivisionThe New Hartford Garden Club is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and encouraging education and appreciation of the preservation of our community through sharing knowledge of gardening, beautification, conservation, ecology, wildlife habitat and environmental responsibility.In commemoration of the club’s 50th anniversary, the traditionally adult organization formed a youth division appropriately named “SPROUTS”. The club has long recognized the need for children to have available safe, educational and fun nature activities that could be enjoyed by the whole family. Children's lack of understanding of where food comes from and how it is grown, and the tragically ironic double scourge of rampant obesity and spreading hunger has spurred the club to take steps to encourage the next generation to be active and healthy stewards in their communities.The advent of “SPROUTS” has been well received by parents, grandparents and family members who cite the programs are carefully crafted to encourage kids of all ages to learn about gardening and environmental responsibility. All agreed that over programming of after-school activities, electronic distractions, and safety concerns are the cause of the disconnect children have from nature. A good example of a recent “SPROUTS” event is the “Planting Day” where kids worked hard to prepare planted pots they decorated with stylish decorated flair to offer for sale at the Plant Sale. All proceeds from the sale are used to fund community projects including; Town Plantings, Local Scholarships,Youth Sprout programs, etc. The SPROUTS will be displaying their handy work in their own dedicated section at the Plant Sale on May 12, 2012 at the New Hartford Town Hall, located on Main Street (Route 44). SPROUTS not only are learning how to grow their gardens, they are discovering the rewards of community service through the club’s youth programs. “Not only do my children enjoy the programs, I’m so pleased this is something we can do together. I have three kids and most youth programs are cost prohibited, but the SPROUTS programs are generally free or have a slight donation requirement. I know these are memories my children will treasure forever” said Mom Erica Mumm. The New Hartford Garden Club would like to encourage parents to partake of the SPROUTS programs with their children. You do not have to be a NHGC member, town residency is not necessary and most of the youth programs are free.
