| 説明 | Assisted ready-made by local sculptor Bagsy (b.1919)Tottenham Cultural Quarter 2012Bagsy's work, encircling the notion of objects and their use as part of our day-to-day experiences, has altered the traditional definition of sculpture. By transforming and manipulating litter and other found objects into works of art, Bagsy subverts their original function and extends our understanding of them by breaking the conventional system of classification. These sculptural arrangements and assisted found ready-mades play with the juxtaposition of objects that bear no relation to each other, as well as with a range of materials taken out of their original contexts. "Empty Carton with Drinking Straw & Scrunched-up Wrapper" is an iconic four-part piece, typical of Bagsy's later work. Displayed on an iron gate of Holy Trinity Church near a bus stop in Philip Lane, it is part of a series of artworks commissioned to celebrate the virtual unreality Cultural Quarter in Tottenham Green. The text on this symbolically empty container reads like a fusion of poetry and biology, highlighting the provenance of some of Britain’s non-native drinks. Alternatively, it can be understood to allude, via the 'M' metaphor, to the many migrants who arrive by plane, train, bus, or car to make their homes here or elsewhere in London. Thanks and Acknowledgements"Empty Carton with Drinking Straw & Scrunched-up Wrapper" has been gifted to the people of Tottenham as a temporary outdoor sculpture.Co-producers :● Tottenham Green Virtual Unreality Cultural Quarter● Institute for Spending Other People's Money● Trustees of the Bagsy Foundation ______________________________§ Location using Google Maps. [Link OK] § The text above is a manipulated, assisted ready-made, with many phrases borrowed from an equally incomprehensible webpage about an artwork by Richard Wentworth. Professor Wentworth is himself a major British found ready-made. Although, as far as I can discover, he has no connection with Tottenham. Nor, I'm assured by those close to Bagsy — his agent, roadies, general hangers-on, and food stylist — nor has Bagsy ever met or collaborated with Richard Wentworth on any projects.§ The "Virtual Unreality" of the Cultural Quarter indicates that there is no actual Cultural Quarter at this location. The Quarter is entirely Conceptual Art. However there is nothing virtual about the public subsidy poured in every year; the cash is real. It is even possible this may be the most expensive and longest running conceptual art installation in Europe. And as such will eventually be listed by Unesco as a Virtual World Heritage non-site. |
