| 説明 | This is a photograph of PC 249D Albert Edward Dive, he was stationed at John Street Police Station which was just off the Edgeware Road. He originally came from Brede, East Sussex and in early August 1909 he returned there to his family home for a summer holiday. On 2nd August PC Dive, his mother and two brothers Harold and Percy went to a nearby orchard in order have some rifle practice, the rifle was held by Harold which he had previously loaded and cocked. As the group entered the orchard Harold turned to shut the gate and the trigger of the rifle caught on his coat and discharged; the bullet struck PC Dive in the neck severing an artery and he bled to death before medical assistance could attend.The Coroner’s inquest took place on 4th August, the Coroner admonished Harold for his handling of the rifle and the jury returned a verdict of accidental death. PC Dive’s body was taken from his home in Brede to the Methodist chapel by six of his former colleagues on a hand ambulance, many officers from John Street attended the funeral including his Superintendent.All three brothers at one time had been grocers assistants at shops in the area surrounding Brede, Albert, the middle brother had broken the mould to join the Metropolitan Police. Subsequently both his older brother Harold and his younger brother Percy joined the Metropolitan Police and served until the mid 1940s. |
