At 2,329 metres, it is not the highest peak of the massif, but is the most well-known. The volcano belongs to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Mount Bromo sits in the middle of a vast plain called the "Sea of Sand" (Indonesian: Lautan Pasir), a protected nature reserve since 1919. The name of Bromo derived from Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu creator god.Semeru, or Mount Semeru, is an active volcano and the highest mountain on the island of Java with 3,676 m. This stratovolcano is also known as Mahameru, meaning "The Great Mountain". The name derived from the Hindu cosmology's mountain of Meru or Sumeru, the abode of gods.Since 1818, at least 55 eruptions have been recorded (10 of which resulted in fatalities) consisting of both lava flows and pyroclastic flows. Semeru has been in a state of near-constant eruption from 1967 to the present. At times, small eruptions happen every 20 minutes or so.Mount Penanjakan (2,770 m) (Indonesian: Gunung Penanjakan) is a well-known viewpoint.(sources: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Bromo and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semeru) |
