| 説明 | The roof of the church is deceptive in its simplicity. The hidden clerestorey surrounds a rather large sunken roof, supported laterally via these cross beams. The resulting halo of light gives the impression that the roof is merely floating above the nave. It's both genuinely unexpected, and quite an astonishing effect.The roof was intended to be copper, but costs prevented that and asphalt was used instead. The recent refurbishment - partly HLF-funded - involved major roof repairs, and the numerous buckets that once graced the nave have thankfully gone. Listed Building Report |
