説明Above the auditorium in the Theatre Royal in Dumfries, Robert Burns gets an unrestricted view of the shows, plays and events held in this grand old Georgian Theatre in Dumfries. In his lifetime he was a regular patron and contributed various "prologues or interludes " for the visiting artists. Since opening in 1792 the theatre's long history has been rather varied. Its initial success led to its being enlarged in 1830 and then in 1876 it was rebuilt to improve and make it more attractive. By the end of the 19th. century it was owned by a Mr. Thomas McKie who kept it open "not as a source of profit but out of public spirit". Such arrangements, generous as they be, rarely last forever and in 1911 the theatre was converted to a cinema, a more profitable option at that time. So it continued until the next latest thing; Television, arrived and put paid to the movies and the cinema closed in 1954, hibernating for six years till it opened once more as a working theatre in 1960. Alas its financial troubles seem far from over in these (relatively) hard times. Not long after the theatre opened Burns was in the audience when at the end of the evening the singing of God Save the King was met with some disapproval and hissing and a call went up to sing the French Republican song "Ca Ira" Burns always maintained that he did not join in the singing as he held a government job in the Excise. However popular sentiment contradicts his denial and he certainly held strong republican sympathies. There were repercussions from this incident and he was lucky to have kept his "placeman" position. Its a fascinating place and I'm very grateful to the gentleman who allowed me in to enjoy its atmosphere and associations, particularly as the building was closed. I arrived as a restaurant delivery was in progress and he kindly showed me round and chatted about Burns and the theatre history. Thank you Sir..Robert Burns 1759 -1796.
