Suddenly, Wal-Mart wasn't the enemy anymore, and then-Mayor Daley announced the openings of at least a dozen Wal-Marts of various sizes in the next few years.For now, Chicago has TWO full-line Wal-Mart stores. Springfield, IL, a city with ONE-TWENTIETH Chicago's population, has three.Examples of Wal-Mart's low prices: A $13.99 2012 Rand McNally Road Atlas for $6.97. That's cheaper than Amazon. (Yes, it has listings for every Wal-Mart and Sam's Club in the United States. SFW.) 3 one-packs of 50W GU10 Halogen Bulbs for 50 cents less than the "Contractor" 3-pack at nearby Lowe's. Wal-Mart's "Equate" house brand of Neutrogena T-Gel shampoo for a little more than half the price. (I've tried it; it works exactly the same).I issue this challenge to the unions: open your own damn discount department store chain. Offer Wal-Mart prices and pay your employees union wages. See how long you last.One last thing. Target, like Wal-Mart, is non-union. But there are NINE Target stores within Chicago's city limits, and a tenth about to open in the old Carson's space at State and Madison, all voted on by our supposedly pro-union city council.
