Brick with ashlar dressings; tileroof; ashlar chapel.PLAN: long range with later ranges forming U-plan, with chapelto north. 2 storeys; 9-window range.EXTERIOR: facade articulated by 8 large projecting stacks withoffsets, now disused; offset buttress to right end. Entrancebetween 6th and 7th stacks has Tudor head in architrave withlabel mould battened door with strap hinges; oval plaqueabove, erected 1720, records the refounding of 1495, acartouche above with the arms of Bishop Smith. Most windowsare small, with brick sills, chamfered jambs and ashlarlintels, and leaded glazing; larger window to left ofcartouche, windows to right of entrance are larger, that toground floor with brick label, that to 1st floor has 2-lightcasement with small-paned glazing; right end has 2 smallwindows to ground floor and later gabled oriel above, with1:3:1-light single-chamfered-mullioned window.Right return next to chapel has blocked elliptical-headedwindow and leaded light. Left end has 1929 additions formingcanted angle and wing to rear, 1966 additions of single-storeyreturn wing and 2-storey rear wing.Rear elevation has 4-centred entrance to cross-passage withbrick arch and niche above with C19 statue. 2-light, 3-lightand single-light windows to left; to right are six 2-storeycanted bays of 1929 with 1:2:1-light windows.INTERIOR: some flat joists with runout stops; front corridorinserted 1929. Chapel has single-vessel nave and sanctuary,with north aisle of 1829.East end: coped gable with kneelers and offset anglebuttresses to right; segmental-pointed window of 5double-cusped lights, small window of pointed arch above andenriched C19 rainwater head to left; blind return has cornice.North aisle has coped west gable with kneelers and gabled bellcote, angle buttresses; 3-light west window has intersectingtracery; north return has similar windows flankingbuttress/stack.South elevation has offset buttresses; double-chamferedpointed entrance to left end; 2-light plate tracery window,lancet, 3-light window and 2-light square-headed window bothwith Perpendicular tracery, and traceried lancet to right end.INTERIOR: roof has cusped arch braces to collars and queenstruts; sanctuary has blocked 3-light square-headed window tonorth; 3-bay arcade to north aisle has octagonal piers andhead stops to hoods; north aisle has king post roof; west endhas vestibule with re-used panelling. Fittings: sanctuary hasbolection-moulded fielded panelling, fluted frieze andcornice, large central panel with frieze with grapes andwheat; piscina to south with arch over restored bowl; gabledtabernacle to north; encaustic tiles. Georgian style.East front facing road of 3 storeys, 2-window range withoutshut under catslide roof to left attached to chapel. Quoinsindicate original form with recessed centre; some remainingdressings to original windows. Entrance has moulded pilasterstrips, frieze and cornice to 6-flush-panel door, similarentrance to return of outshut. Windows mostlysegmental-headed, that to ground floor with 18-pane sash, 2similar windows to 1st floor and 2-light casements, one withpartly leaded glazing, to 2nd floor, similar windows to returnof outshut.Rear 3-window range has cogged frieze over ground floor,ashlar cornice over 1st floor and simple brick top cornice.Windows have sills, and brick flat arches, over 8/12-panesashes to ground floor, 16-pane sashes to 1st floor, 9-panesashes to 2nd floor. Some diapering visible to left of 1stfloor, and dressings and straight joints indicating formerwindows. Left return, entrance front, has 2 projecting stacks,round-headed entrance has doorcase with panelled pilasterstrips and cornice, fanlight with radial glazing bars and3-fielded-panel door; varied fenestration including 18-panehorned sashes. Right return has similar blocked windows andentrance with doorcase.INTERIOR: cellars have medieval masonry, some recesses with4-centred heads and stop-chamfered joists; open well staircasehas close string with entablature with pulvinated frieze,column-on-vase balusters, square newels and moulded handrail;entrance hall has C17 panelling; room to rear left has c1720bolection-moulded panelling with dado rail and cornice,fireplace and elliptical recess with fixed sideboard; 1stfloor has rooms with large beams and joists, 2 richly mouldedbeams; 2-fielded-panel doors.The house is built on the foundations of the original hall ofthe hospital, which was an extension of the chapel; thebuilding was represented in the early C18 as having gablesflanking a central recess.(Victoria History of the County of Stafford: Oxford: 1970-:P.279-89; Clayton H: St John's Hospital Lichfield: Lichfield:1984-; Buck S and N: The South West Prospect of the City ofLichfield: 1711-1753).Listing NGR: SK1173109175 |
