| 説明 | '61 and '71 Cutlasses. In '64, Pontiac, Buick and Olds compact cars were upsized to intermediates, and stayed that way for the next 23 years. The last RWD mid-size GM cars rolled off the assembly line in 1988; the last full-size cars, in 1996. Since then, except for the Solstice and Sky, Corvette, G8, CTS and STS, XLR and Camaro, it's been almost all FWD crap. Would GM have staved off bankruptcy if they'd continued to build RWD cars, downsized them, and given them standard limited-slip differentials so unskilled drivers would feel better about driving them in wet and icy conditions? What if GM had continued to refine and improve its aluminum-block V8, extended that technology to V6's and 4-cylinders, and built the best AMERICAN cars it could build instead of imitations of Japanese putt-putts? We'll never know, and it's too late now.By the way, RWD in snow is not a death sentance. #1. If you're really a nervous Nellie, throw on some snow tires. In the BACK. #2. Know what you can do, and know what your car can do. Practice in a deserted parking lot, if necessary. #3. No sudden moves, like mashing the gas pedal, that will make your car fishtail. #4. If it does fishtail, get off the gas and TURN THE STEERING WHEEL IN THE DIRECTION THE BACK END IS GOING. #5. If you're going up a hill, don't stop, or you'll have a very hard time regaining traction again. #6 If you're in a non-ABS car, pump your brakes in wet or icy conditions, to keep your front wheels from locking up and going straight when what you want to do is turn. (That's all ABS does, telling a computer to pump your brakes for you. Do you really want to depend on a computer for THAT!?) #6 GET OFF THE DAMN CELLPHONE AND CONCENTRATE ON THE ROAD. And #7. In really bad weather, like the blizzard of '79 or last year's Snowpocalypse in Chicago, the only vehicle that's getting you to work is a snowmobile. Even 4WD has its limitations. In those conditions, if you live in the city, leave the car at home and take public transit. If you're in a subdivision on the edge of a cornfield and you're snowed in, God bless you, and I hope your refrigerator and cupboards are well-stocked. |
