| 説明 | The building was built in 1901 and opened in 1902 as the retailing premises of the Balmain Cooperative Society Ltd. Only two working class cooperatives have fragmented histories lasting more than a year or so in metropolitan Sydney. This building was constructed for one; the other was at Granville in premises not yet traced. The first coop in Balmain was in 1879 (premises unknown), the second in the 1890s in a building in Darling Street, and this building was built in the third attempt at cooperation.Balmain Co-op had 14,000 members by 1921. The Balmain Co-op was hit by closures of the local industries during the 1930s Depression. Membership declined and it fell into debt. The Co-op went into voluntary liquidation in 1936.Description: This is a face brick building with sandstone details, having two storeys plus basement. Ground floor openings are round arched and there is a two leaved multipanelled front door. The parapet is decorated with square topped pilasters, arches, cornice and the society's name inscribed. Upper floor windows are large and rectangular. The ground floor level has four unequal bays with brick dividing walls incorporating round arched openings and engaged piers. There is evidence to suggest that the ground floor and basement levels of the portions of the buildings fronting Montague Street were built in four stages, with the most recently built being the part three storey portion at the southern end of the site.
