| 説明 | Homeless teenagers and military police clash on Kasr El Aini Street on the southern edge of Tahrir Square on 17 December 2011.When I arrived just after dawn I noticed a large number of military police were clearing Tahrir Square. Witnesses told me that they had beaten and arrested demonstrators and smashed parked vehicles presumably on the somewhat dubious assumption that they belonged to people sympathetic to the demonstrators. However it was not long before they decided to retreat from the square rather than face off with a small but growing crowd of homeless youths who were naively reckless in venting their anger at the large body of military police despite their being armed with batons, riot shields, tear gas and probably live ammunition too. Where was the revolution that the crowds had fought for ? How could cops still be killing dozens of protesters with impunity and detaining children and youths illegally and subjecting them to beatings and worse ? Their crime often merely being on the street and homeless. I didn't see who threw the molotov cocktails - unlikely to be one of the homeless teenagers who were more likely to be armed with stones or sticks. Possibly police or militia but they would be more likely to attack the crowd with batons, tear gas or gunfire - more likely some older person who either did not believe in or had lost their faith in peaceful protest. |
