説明Standing on the driveway in front of Arlington House, the Robert E. Lee Memorial, at Arlington National Cemetery. I'm slightly southeast of the house, looking northeast. This is one of exactly two flagpoles at Arlington National Cemetery. This flagpole was probably erected some time between 1861 and 1864 (just when is unclear). The flag is raised to to the top each morning, and then lowered to half-mast in respect of the constant burials going on at the cemetery. In the evening, it is raised to the top again, and then lowered and taken down.Arlington House was built by George Washington Parke Custis, adopted son of George Washington, in 1803. George Hadfield, also partially designed the United States Capitol, designed the mansion. The north and south wings were completed between 1802 and 1804. but the large center section and portico were not finished until 1817.George Washington Parke Custis died in 1857, leaving the Arlington estate and house to his eldest daughter, Mary Custis Lee -- wife of General Robert E. Lee.
