His main contribution to the intellectual culture of his day was Babbage's principle, which stated that work should be broken down into repetitive and unrewarding tasks in order to make the lives of ordinary people as unpleasant as possible. Babbage represents one face of the computerised, automated future. The other, hippie strain posits a future in which machines free us from the tyranny of work. |
