| 説明 | People started gathering in Ballarat on December 2nd 2011 for the commemoration of the 157th anniversary of the Eureka Stockade rebellion which was ruthlessly and violently crushed at dawn on December 3, 1854 by the British military and the newly formed Victoria Police. Events at the commemoration included a 4am Dawn vigil, broadcast live on community radio 3CR, breakfast in Eureka Hall, march to Bakery Hill where the Eureka Australia medals were presented, march to Ballarat Town Hall for a flag raising, march to old Ballarat Cemetery to pay respects to those who died at Eureka, a visit to the Ballarat Fine Arts Gallery to look at the original Eureka Flag, march back to Eureka park for a late picnic lunch, then a dinner at Eureka Stockade hotel with a Guest speaker. For the first time in 10 years the police turned up and wanted to know what was happening. During the dawn vigil at about 4.30am a squad car cruised by and stopped. The police officers wandered over and asked what was happening. I told them it was the Eureka dawn vigil, and they happily left. The second time was while we were marching up Sturt street towards the Town Hall 3 squad cars came up and wanted to know what we were doing. There was a bit of tension outside the Town Hall. Evidently it is unsafe to march without police accompaniement, even though we have had no trouble in previous years. They accompanied us to the cemetery and back to Bakery Hill. Really, it was a waste of their time. |
