Attributed by Pevsner to engineerEdward Wilson. Blue-brick laid in English bond with Bath-stonedressings; hipped slate roof with parapeted eaves; 7 stacks, 6 toridge and 1 to rear roof slope, all with oversailing details andpots.PLAN: Central full-width and full-height booking hall flanked bywaiting, refreshment rooms, offices etc. on 2-floors. Theelevations have a large domestic scale and style with sashwindows.EXTERIOR: West Elevation: 2 storeys and basement. 16 (4:1:6:1:4)first-floor windows. Porte-cochre with ridge-and-furrow glazedcanopy on fabricated wrought-iron lattice beams supported bycast-iron columns; ornamental timber fascia. Platform canopy onwrought-iron supports. Stone detailing includes plinth coping;ground-floor sill band; moulded string course over first-floorwindows and linking rusticated quoins and pilasters; mouldedeaves cornice with blocking course over centre 3-bays; door andwindow surrounds. First-floor windows are 3/3 with sills andmoulded architraves; windows to central bay above the canopy aresmaller 3/6 sashes in plain reveals with sills but notarchitraves. The ground-floor windows are mainly 6/6 with mouldedarchitraves; the 4 windows to each end bay have a moulded corniceon ornate scrolled console brackets with shell motif under. Thecentral window to the centre bay has a similar bracketed corniceover paired 6/6 sashes: The replacement fully-glazed flankingdoors to the booking-hall have similar moulded architrave andcornice to the windows but no console brackets. The single windowto each adjacent bay has a pediment in lieu of a cornice.Single-storey wings with concealed roofs flank the main block; 3windows in the left-wing and 4 in the right; 6/6 and 3/3 sashes,all in plain reveals with sills and wedge lintels. The rear wallsof the flanking wings extend above and beyond the building itselfto screen the platform beyond; the walls are pierced byhigh-level lunette windows with radial, metal-framed, multi-paneglazing; some of these windows form fanlights to gated openingsbelow.Platform elevation: 2 storeys, similar to but less ornate thanroad frontage with mainly 3/3 sashes to the first-floor and 6/6to the ground-floor, all in plain reveals with sills and mouldedarchitraves, those to the ground-floor being in timber withvertically boarded dado panelling below. Doors are mainly4-panel, some with 8-pane overlights, all with mouldedarchitraves.INTERIOR: little remains of the original booking hall except partof the stone-flagged floor. Some of the offices retain plastercornices, picture rails, panelled reveals to door openings andmoulded architraves.SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: parapet wall to approach road adjoinscanopy. Stucco over brick, central part sits on stone plinth withstone gutter below. Pair of ast-iron lamps on parapet wallidentified as 'Revo Tipton'.HISTORICAL NOTE: the two platforms and four lines of rails with aspan of 86 feet, were originally covered by a curved roof ofwrought-iron lattice girders and glazed on the ridge-and-furrowprinciple; this was removed c1936.(Buildings of England: Pevsner N: Worcestershire: Harmondsworth:1968-1985: 38, 325, 333; An Historical Survey of Selected GreatWestern Stations: Potts CR: An Historical Survey of Great WesternStations: Oxford: 1985-: 209; Worcester Daily Times: Not known:Worcester at Work: Worcester: 1903-: 8).Now views from platform 2, while I waited for the next hour for the next train home.Old clock currently not in service. Sign says "please refer to the electronic displays instead".Got my own watch anyway. Although those displays are useful to seeing when your train is coming. Not that it tells you if it comes early (only says On Time). If late, it would say "Expected at xx:xx"). |
