| 説明 | An unusal hover-fly that doesn't hoverFred found these flies today and captured some photos. It is a fly that has the look of a wasp being so black but with a yellow protrusion between the eyes. I have only seen this fly only once which moved away from me quickly. Today the flies were happy to sit while having their photo taken. Edit 29-11-2011 A hoverfly or Syrphidae Orthoprosopa (Orthoprosopa) grisa is the correct ID. Check the comments below for the correct identification. I have left the information below for interest sake not that this is a Microdon species. They belong to the Syrphid family (hover flies) but are different than other hover flies in that they don't hover around flowers but stay near ant colonies which act as the host for the flies in their larval stages. In some species of the Microdon sp flies, the larva is thought to consume the ant larva. Not a lot is known about these flies. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microdon Thanks Bernhard for telling me the family name. |
