| 説明 | At just below the 1000' contour Alston laid claim to being the highest market town in England, alas the town's altitude has proved more durable than its market which sadly disappeared years ago. The market cross is a replica of a replica of the first constructed as a gift to the town in 1765 by Sir William Stephenson Bart. Sir William had grown up in Alston but moved down south and became Lord Mayor of London, a case of the boy done good. But unfortunately the position on the steep hillside made the cross a regular target for out of control 20th. century lorries, a circumstance, Sir William could be forgiven for failing to have have foreseen. |
