| 説明 | I was heading into Leamington Spa Town Centre, when I noticed these lodge buildings and the park / gardens.Just after I had a look at the Pump Rooms.From Parade.This is the West Lodge (South).Bit hard getting this one due to the sun light being directly above it.I then went into the gardens.Both lodges are Grade II listed.Gate between the West Lodge buildings.West Lodge (South), Royal Leamington Spa - British Listed BuildingsROYAL LEAMINGTON SPASP3165NE JEPHSON GARDENS1208-1/7/188 West Lodge (South)25/03/70(Formerly Listed as:JEPHSON GARDENSSouth Lodge)GV IIGate lodge. 1846 with later additions and alterations. ByDavid Squirhill. Brick with painted stucco facades and Welshslate roof. Italianate style.EXTERIOR: single storey, single bay with extensions to eastand south, originally square on plan with projecting bays.Moulded plinth, band, rusticated band surmounted by rusticatedquoins to angles.Entrance to north side in solid projecting porch, part-glazeddoor with blind overlight with tooled round-arch with maskkeystone and continuous impost band, segmental pediment.To returns of porch are round-arched 1/1 sashes with mouldedsills. To either side are narrow 1/1 sashes with rusticatedjambs and arch with keystone.To west facade a projecting, solid bay with central 1/1 sashwith overlight, with tooled arch with keystone and continuousimpost band, to returns are narrow 1/1 sashes. To either sideare 1/1 round-arched sashes with tooled arch, all with mouldedsills. C-scroll frieze, modillion cornice supports wide eaves.Hipped roof, 2 tall rear stacks with cornices.Rear extension has bow window, with three 6-pane windowscurved on section, and with pilasters between, with frieze andegg-and-dart cornice, on base with horizontal rustication;modillion cornice supports wide eaves.INTERIOR: not inspected.HISTORICAL NOTE: the Gardens were established in 1836 as acovenanted space, and laid out and planted in 1846-1848 whenthey were renamed after Dr Henry Jephson, a local medicalpractitioner of considerable repute.Forms an almost symmetrical pair with West Lodge (North) (qv).(Cave LF: Royal Leamington Spa Its History and Development:Chichester: 1988-: 59; Dudley: A Complete History ofLeamington Spa: 323; EH Register of Parks and Gardens: FP3265). |
