説明With the hopped-down 6 cylinder, the VW-Porsche 914-6 had something like 110 hp and for $2000 more you could have a 911 base model, MSRP to MSRP. That's a 8K 914 and a 10K 911, so $2K was 25%, but you got more than 25% more horse power, more than 25% usable interior volume. Only about 3000 (I'll look up the the number and edit this) 914-6s were made, total, while well over 110,000 914 (4 cylinder) went to paying customers.Starting in 1972, the 2 litre 6 was replaced with a 2 litre 4 made from the same robust VW Type IV as the base 1.7/1.8 model, but with a Porsche designed head that breathed better. Nearly the same HP, weighed less, cheaper to maintain. Having only a VW short block didn't add any allure for the Porsche buying public and a lot of "not a real Porsche" sniffing resulted. Having driven a number of Type IV VW Transporter and (air-cooled) Vanagons, AND a 412 station wagon, as well as a number of 914s I can promise you, its a Porsche. Same front suspension as a 911, lower, smaller, grip like, well, a Gmund or a Boxter or Cayman... I still dream about driving mine. Steering, not accelerating, to be sure,... And with a serious motor, 200hp or so, a 914 was part of the big 1970 Porsche Win Le Mans! deal with a 6th overall. It took another generation (of humans) before a Corvette beat 6th overall at Le Mans :^)DSC_0057
