説明 | A view of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial. Originally known as the Hemicycle, this ceremonial entrance to Arlington National Cemetery was opened in 1932. Along the Arlington Memorial Bridge and the George Washington Memorial Parkway (then known as the Mount Vernon Memorial Parkway), it was constructed in celebration of the bicentennial of George Washington's birthday. Unfinished, unused, and in disrepair by the early 1980s, it was transformed into the Women in Military Service for America Memorial and opened to the public on October 20, 1997. This image is taken from the southeast side of the plaza in front of the memorial, and is looking almost due east. The unfinished panels were pierced in 1997 and now contain stairways leading to the interior of the memorial and to the terrace on top of it. Several of the original, undeocrated apses in the Hemicycle can also be seen. The apse, with its as-yet unfinished decorative panels, occupies the center of the image. The circular area to the center-right is the fountain and pool (unfilled with water at this time due to water conservation measures). |
