W.Note: The above "gem" was mined from my unpublished "Limburger Lyrics." Do you smell a fault?W.Historical Background:It is believed that B.F.W., the sender of this postcard, is Benjamin F. Williams. Williams was a Harvard trained English professor at Valparaiso University, and he would have been a contemporary of Colonel Mark L. DeMotte, who founded and was the first dean of Valparaiso University's law school. Benjamin F. Williams was born April 25, 1867, in Lebanon, Laclede County, Missouri, and died on May 9, 1928, in Laclede County, Missouri.Mark Lindsay DeMotte was born December 28, 1832, in Rockville, Parke County, Indiana. In 1853, DeMotte graduated with from the Literary Department of Asbury College (present day DePauw University) in Greencastle, Indiana, and then earned a degree from the Law Department at Asbury in 1855. DeMotte then moved to Valparaiso to begin his law practice. In 1856, DeMotte was elected prosecuting attorney for the judicial circuit comprising Lake, Porter, LaPorte, St. Joseph, Marshall and Starke counties. In 1861, DeMotte entered military service, being commissioned a First Lieutenant in the 4th Battery of the Indiana Light Artillery in the Union Army. The following year, DeMotte was promoted to Captain. After spending time in the practice of law and in the newspaper business in Lexington, Lafayette County, Missouri, Colonel DeMotte returned to Valparaiso in 1877 to resume his law practice. In 1879, he organized and founded the Northern Indiana Law School, which today is known as the Valparaiso University School of Law.In 1880, DeMotte was elected as a Republican to Forty-seventh Congress of the United States; his tenure was short, as he was defeated in 1882.On March 24, 1890, President Benjamin Harrison appointed DeMotte to serve as a Postmaster at Valparaiso - a position he held until March 20, 1894. DeMotte served as Dean of the Northern Indiana Law School from 1890 to 1908.For two terms, DeMotte served as President of the Western Writers. DeMotte wrote numerous articles and short stories that were often based on local characters and his personal experiences while a youngster in southern Indiana.DeMotte died September 28, 1908, in Valparaiso, just eight months after receiving this postcard from Benjamin F. Williams. He is interred in Maplewood Cemetery in Valparaiso.Copyright 2011. Some rights reserved.
