| 説明 | Corporal Martin D. Eichman served with the H Company, 2D Battalion, 4th Marines (H/2/4) during the defense of the Philippines and was captured at the fall of Corregidor. Eichman spent the next 40 months as a prisoner of war. Although treatment was harsh at the POW camp, they were afforded the luxury of maintaining a diary. Eichman found interesting use of his diary and recorded the topic of much discussion - food. Entitled "Let's Eat" the food entries where hallucinatory and reflected the food items desired by the POWs. While having starving men record such items may seem like torture, Eichman and his fellow POW's found hope and sanity in the process. The goal of surviving to be reunited with items such as hamburgers and oyster stew provided these Marines with extra motivation. Also, the process of recording cooking instructions ensured that their mental faculties remained sharp. |
