Demetrius McCowan with the 1106th Theater Aviation Support Maintenance Group from Fresno, Calif., radios in his start point while conducting a lanes evaluation during the Best Warrior’s Competition at Camp San Luis Obispo, Calif., Sept. 12, 2011. The lanes evaluation, which tests the Soldiers on the ability to quickly and accurately call in reports, react to direct and indirect fire, perform first aid, engage the enemy, clear a building and call in a medevac, is just one of several events in the week-long competition. “It promotes excellence,” said McCowan’s sponser, Sgt. 1st Class James Palleres of the competition. “All of these Soldiers and NCOs, whether they win or not, are going walk away from this being that much better, having that much more confidence and they’re going to take it back to the unit and they’re going to speak with the other Soldiers and encourage them to better themselves.” (Army National Guard photo/Staff Sgt.
