"I seriously never knew the Corps did all this."Prashade referred to the multiple district projects and programs he learned about during a briefing by Steve Dwyer, chief of navigation and operations branch. Dwyer and Department of the Army Intern Savoth Hy also spent the morning speaking to students about the Corps' intern program.Dwyer, a graduate of the University of Southern California, currently lectures at the School of Architecture for his alma mater and he provides technical assistance to design studios at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Dwyer is significantly involved in the district's recruiting efforts and works extensively on the intern program. "Today was very productive; the students were very attentive and they asked a lot of questions," said Dwyer.Dwyer and Hy visited with the group during their lunch break to answer more questions and provide more details about internships and career opportunities with the Corps.Students toured the emergency operations and reservoir operations centers where briefings were provided by Anne Hutton, emergency management chief, and Ned Araujo, reservoir regulations chief. According to Gretel Ochoa, Cal Poly Pomona engineering student, the opportunity was invaluable. "I didn't know how involved the Corps was with water projects," said Ochoa. "I was so impressed. I think everyone learned so much today." The day's events were organized by the Equal Employment Opportunity and Public Affairs offices as a way to continue the district's efforts to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Math educational awareness and careers.Former Corps employee and current college educator, Humberto Gallegos, contacted the district regarding the educational outreach opportunity for his students. Those in attendance were either current or former students."We're so thankful to the Corps for doing this," said Gallegos. |
