説明 | Members of the family Asteraceae are comprised mostly of small flowering species on the mainland. But on the Galapagos, those of the genus Scalesia are towering, yet mostly scrawny, trees. They vary in morphology a good deal between each island. Those we saw here on Santa Cruz were tall and thin, but on Floreana they were shorter and wider. Scalesia on the Galapagos usually occur in monotypic forests in the highlands, meaning forests of essentially just themselves. The biodiversity in the galapageon highlands is remarkably low considering that it is more humid and tropical, and the diversity is even poor compared to the arid lowland regions on the same islands. It's been postulated that this anomalous trend is due to the recent glaciation events that predominately covered only the highland regions, eliminating space for the wet/tropical ecosystems and only allowing a few species to persist. To my knowledge this has been most thoroughly demonstrated with cryptic species of arthropods and their closest relatives. |
