| 説明 | Hermann Neubauer worked as a cook at the Palmer House Hotel and later the Bismarck Hotel in Chicago. In 1940 he fled to Germany via the German consulate in New York, intent on fighting for the Nazis. There he trained at the Brandenburg Sabotage School in Germany. Herbert Hans Haupt, a fellow former Chicago resident, also studied here.On June 17, 1942 a German U-Boat carrying Neubauer, Haupt and six other German spies landed at a beach near Jacksonville, Florida. They changed into civilian clothing and took trains to their target cities. Neubauer & Haupt went to Chicago. Their mission, known as Operation Pastorius, was to sabotage economic targets in the US.The FBI started tailing them almost immediately, having been tipped off by a turncoat member of the New York faction of the spy ring. On June 27 the FBI arrested him and Neubauer. Both men were transferred to Washington D.C. and were executed by electric chair on August 8, 1942, along with four other spies.Located at 2849 N.
