| 説明 | Roe deer - Capreolus capreolus. There is a long, straight clearing through hawthorn scrub made and maintained by the people who look after the power lines running through it. Early this year all the ground cover was vigorously removed by men in flourescent jackets and, with the ground a wilderness of woodchips, I missed being able to share the space with the deer. Now, with Ragwort waist high in places, they are just beginning to feel welcome in the space again. I was half way down the clearing when this animal joined me. Instead of doubling back as I usually do and leaving it in peace, I needed to carry on down the hill if I was not to make a long detour and be late for the evening service. Keeping the far side of the clearing and trying not to pay it too much attention, I was blessed with its company for a long while. It even walked towards me at one point. I was almost past it and well on my way when it turned back, deciding it was safer to return to the cover of the trees for a while. Whiteshute Ridge, near Winchester, Hampshire, UK. |
