| 説明 | One of the oldest in Georgia, this 6th century church is still in use today, and affords beautiful views from the hilltop upon which it rests. It is situated on a high hill across from the ancient capital of Georgia, the city of Mtskheta, which is about 20km/12 miles away from Tbilisi. This site is both a Church and a Monastery, the Church dating back to the early 6th century.According to historical accounts, in the early 4th century, St. Nino converted King Mirian III of Iberia to Christianity, and soon after placed a large wooden cross on the site of a pagan temple here. The cross was reported to work miracles and thus became legendary, while drawing many pilgrims to the site. A small church was erected over the remnants of the wooden cross around 545 called the “Small Church of Jvari”. The present Church was built between 586 and 605 A.D./C.E. |
