説明 After several weeks spent folding the stack of twelve "stars" (one star per folding session, and never more than two folding sessions per week), I was finally ready to begin the assembly process. The first few "stars" were trivial to connect together, but as the project came closer to completion, it took more joining tabs to keep the stars in place and more pinching to hold things together until the glue could set. The last star needed the most joining tabs--20--and with no room to maneuver behind it, it proved to be fairly difficult to connect. By my count, the final unit tallies were 60 large triangles, 360 small triangles, 60 large joining tabs, 480 small joining tabs, and 60 "hybrid" joining tabs (which connect a large triangle on one side to two small triangles on the other.) Curious onlookers have asked me several times now what this shape's name is, but like most novel polyhedra, it doesn't really have one. I guess I would describe it as "an icosahedron with spikes, where even the spikes have their own spikes." It is not quite an icosahedron, not quite a dodecahedron, and not quite an icosidodecahedron, either, although it resembles all of those things. Truth be told, the structure is not as rigid as I expected it to be. A little pressure applied to the vertices at the base of the "spikes" tends to collapse them (though they can be popped back into place.) However, the work as a whole could not be called "flimsy", either; it does not cave in under its own weight when rested on a flat surface. My attempt to find a pleasing coloring arrangement for the faces of this object were fruitless. In the end, I chose a rainbow pattern because rainbows are pretty and nice. The colors are arranged so that the red star is on the top center with orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple as its five neighbors. I mirrored the process on the opposite side using the six washed-out versions of those shades.
