説明 | School kids drink from one of the few remaining public water pumps in the District, ca. March 1903.The 3/15/03 "Washington Times" reported that the pumps (dozens of which once dotted the District) were painted bright green, had a carved wooden acorn attached to the top as a decoration, and a ladle (shown) chained to the handle for passersby to drink from. The pumps apparently served as neighborhood landmarks, and were popular meeting places. They were fed by D.C.'s many springs and (now enclosed or built over) creeks. When this photo was taken, widespread indoor plumbing had rendered the pumps pretty much obsolete, though a handful hung on for another twenty years or so. |
