説明Sanquhar Castle was built by the Crichton family in the 13th century. Situated on the southern approach to the former royal burgh of Sanquhar in Dumfries and Galloway, it sits on the trail of the Southern Upland Way. The castle is bounded on the west by the River Nith, to the north by a burn, and made strong by a deep ditch running round the remainder of the boundary. It has been visited by notable figures including Robert the Bruce, William Wallace, Edward I, Mary, Queen of Scots, and James VI.The Castle was sold by the Crichtons in the mid 17th century to Sir William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry, who established the fairytale pink sandstone Drumlanrig Castle ten miles south of Sanquhar near Thornhill. From then on the castle at Sanquhar began to steadily crumble to a ruin, until 1895 when John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, purchased it and attempted to enthuse a restoration of his ancestral home, following successful restorations at Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch in Wales. Work ended following his death in 1900, and what is left of the site is a mix of restoration and original stonework. (Thanks to Wikipedia for the info). In 1983 I was a competitor in the Karrimor Mountain Marathon, a two-day race over Upper Nithsdale and Queensberry). The race was centred on Drumlarig Castle and at the start the Duke addressed the massed competitors saying that the last time so many folks were in his courtyard was when Bonnie Prince Charlie called in on his way south to Derby! Drumlanrig Castle is the jewel in the crown of the Queensberry Estate, in turn part of the Buccleuch Estates Ltd. Robert Burns wrote the following unflattering verses about the then Duke: -STANZAS ON THE DUKE OF QUEENSBERRYHow shall I sing Drumlanrig’s Grace-Discarded remnant of a raceOnce great in martial story? His forbear’s virtues all contrasted-The very name of Douglas blasted-His that invented glory.Hate, envy, oft the Douglas bore:But he has superadded moreAnd sunk them in contempt;Follies and crimes have stained the name; But, Queensberry, thine the virgin claim,From aught that’s good exempt.Robert Burns 1759 – 1796.
