| 説明 | View from the James Maitland Balfour obelisk north over Standingstone towards Traprain Law.The sight of dozens of smoking chimneys in the countryside was at odds with today's bucolic landscape. A. G. Bradley, a keen East Lothian golfer and writer wrote in "The Gateway of Scotland East Lothian, Lammermoor and the Merse" in 1912:"I well remember, too, the look of this stretch of country on still, murky November afternoons, when the summer colouring had vanished and left the land sear and brown, when the smoke from half-a-dozen steam ploughs and as many threshing engine chimneys within easy sight, drifted about in the deepening gloom, giving out an oddly conflicting sense of stir and a queer impression of beef and bread manufacture at high pressure, rather than the normal calm of a conventional winter Arcady." |
