| 説明 | Lloyd Copeland – A Shearer’s Life.Story by Sue Andrew, photo by Italo VardaroLloyd was born near Waikerie in 1928 on his parent’s farm at Lowbank. When he left school, there were 600 sheep to shear on the farm and shearers were hard to come by, so anyone who could hold a pair of shears could have a go.“I must have got a bit of sheep dung on my brain! I found I had a bit of a yen for it!”Lloyd built up his skills and soon neighbouring farmers were hiring him. “During these times I had a ten-week stint where I cracked the magical 100 a day!” Shearers were paid five pound per 100 sheep. This was good money as ordinary jobs only paid ten pound for a day’s work.Then Lloyd was off, “I rode the old Harley down the Coorong, dust flying everywhere. A chap there had more than 3000 wethers and couldn’t get anyone to shear them as they were all asking for award rates. I took on the job and didn’t come home till March!”Lloyd’s career lasted for 43 years, shearing over 806 000 sheep and 480 000 crutched.
