| 説明 | The fortified wall surrounding the Chinese city of Xi'an, which is an ancient capital of China, represents one of the oldest and best preserved city walls in China. The original city wall of Chang'an began in 194 BC and lasted for four years. That original wall measured 25.7 km in length and was 12–16 metres thick / wide at the base. The existing city wall was started by the Ming Dynasty in 1370 AD and encircles a much smaller city area of 14 km². The wall measures 13.7 km (8.5 miles) in circumference, is 12 metres (40 feet) high and is 15–18 metres (50 - 60 feet) thick / wide at the base. Every 120 metres there's a rampart which extends out from the main wall. All together, there are 98 ramparts on the wall which were built to defend against any enemy climbing up the wall. Each rampart has a sentry building, in which the soldiers could protect the entire wall without exposing themselves to the enemy. The distance between every two ramparts is just within the range of an arrow shot from either side. The city wall at Xi'an includes four gates and they are respectively named as Changle (meaning eternal joy) in the east, Anding (harmony peace) in the west, Yongning (eternal peace) in the south and Anyuan (forever harmony) in the north. The south gate, Yongning, is the most beautifully decorated one. It is very near to the Bell Tower, the centre of the city. It's possible to cycle all the way around the top of the city wall and bikes and tandems can be hired once up on the wall.This photograph is one of a series of photos taken whilst on top of the city wall at Xi'an by Julian Mason whilst on a trip to China with his family in April 2011. |
