説明 | This pagoda used to be the key feature of Wongaksa, a Buddhist temple that no longer exists. The ten-story pagoda is designated as National Treasure No. 2. Although out in the open air at the time of this photo in 1994, it was enclosed in glass later. The site of Wongaksa is now an urban park, formerly well known as Pagoda Park, but now officially known as T'apgol Park (탑골공원). T'apgol Park has been the site of many protests; the main protest for the March 1st, 1919 uprising against Japanese colonial rule was held here, and many of the protests in the 1980s against the Chun Doo-hwan military dictatorship took place here too. When protests are not going on, T'apgol Park sees senior citizens hang out and play board or card games. I also heard of T'apgol Park being a popular gay men's cruising spot at night, but I have no way of confirming that.As this photo dates from 1994, titles are done in the internationally accepted McCune-Reischauer Romanization that South Korea used at this time, with Revised Romanization, South Korea's current Romanization system, in parentheses for cross-reference. |
