説明Ashley Duenas' piece can be seen on the window."Initially I was inspired by the politics of memory—I became very interested in understanding time/memory of place. I questioned how we can begin mapping the interior memory of space to an exterior memory and began seeking out ways in which we perceive our environments by experimenting with text and image. What is the language of perception that ultimately gets formed into memory? What are fundamental processes of memory? I seek to investigate these questions through different levels of analysis. Also, these basic questions in art brought me to Columbia University’s School of General Studies, where I study psychology and neuroscience.Prior to Columbia I worked in the art business and studied at SFAI (San Francisco Art Institute), where I worked with photographer Susannah Hays. She encouraged thinking about topologies and entropy in the artistic process and raised questions like, how do visually constructed languages essentially set free previously framed forms of thought? Susannah exposed me to work in alternative photography and I began making my own cameras, printing on lith film, and using cyanotype and van dyke processes. Art itself is a very scientific process. For example, the process of photography began with silver nitrate salts. Artists also need to consider the pH levels of paper for printing. It is basic chemistry. But even this artistic relationship with science is changing; I would say that today art has a closer relationship with technology because of the culture. Some artists might choose to use technology as a medium, but I’m more interested in the overwhelming amount of information that technology is producing. How will we be able to process all of this information and how will this alter aspects of our perception and memory over time?" Ashley Duenas GS'11.
