| 説明 | At Transportation Camp I claimed that taxi pick-ups and drop-offs are indirect evidence of pedestrian activity near those locations, but I hadn't actually reexamined the data in a few months.I still believe that it is true, but I had only looked at whether drop-offs or pick-ups dominated each location and not the magnitude of trips that began or ended at each location. My feeling now is that most taxi trips begin and end near Union Square, the Financial District, the Caltrain station, neighborhood commercial areas, or a few other specific points of interest, and that trips to or from homes are relatively rare.Red is locations where passengers boarded taxis; Blue is where passengers left taxis.The reason some points are in the middle of blocks is that the Cabspotting data feed does not actually record departures and arrivals; it records where taxis are and whether or not they have a passenger. If you plot the location where a taxi was when it was first noticed to have changed status, you get a lot of locations where the taxi had probably already in motion for a little while. For example you get a lot of apparent pickups on Oak and on Lombard, whereas these probably actually happened nearer to Haight or Chestnut. (Drop-offs seem to be more realistic, probably because the taxi sits in one place for at least a short time while the passenger pays for the trip.) Recording a location in between the known-empty location and the known-passenger location (or vice versa) seems fairer, but results in some fuzziness because of the time between samples.Data from Cabspotting, August, 2010-March, 2011. |
