| 説明 | We know that this photograph was taken by W. Barkley of Belleville at a church picnic in the pine grove, Cloyne, in 1895.Some records say this picnic was held "on the banks of Great Salt Lake" (now called Benny's Lake). After discovering it, we hadso many questions ...There are over one hundred people in the picture. How could they possibly all be attending the Cloyne Methodist ChurchPicnic? Remember, this was 1895, the church had been recently built, and enthusiasm was at its peak. This was actually thesocial event of the year. We believe this was a celebration that combined the congregations of the Harlowe, Northbrook, and Cloyne Methodist Churches. Why were they so elegantly dressed? They were "second-generation" pioneers, that is, their parents and grandparents hadsettled the area. By this time, they owned an outfit to wear to church, picnics, weddings and funerals.Of course, within our memory, we know that there used to be a two-hundred-year-old forest situated in the area of theBarrie Community Hall and the Pioneer Museum and Archives. The men would nail great wooden planks between the trees toform tables, and the women placed their pies on them. Those same trees were destroyed by a microburst on August 2, 2002,some of which were later milled to form part of the first Museum addition.
