| 説明 | John Pringle is on the left, and an unknown woman is on the right.Mary Lloyd Johnson has captured in these seven photos, a way of life that has mostly disappeared. Mary photographed people picking and selling blueberries south of Kaladar on Highway 41 in 1951 and 1952. She captured families, sometimes three generations working together, gathering blueberries to sell along Highway 41 and beyond.The Kaladar hills and ‘Bald Mountains’ were, at one time, lush with blueberries. For anyone who has picked blueberries, this can be hard work. It was rough country, hot in the summer, with biting insects. When we see these photos, we wonder, did families camp here for several days, picking and selling blueberries at the roadside? Mary took several dozen photos. Unfortunately, most were too poor quality to post. They tell a tale of hardship, long days for presumably little money. Maybe it was just enough to get by. In one photo, a family with a three-week-old baby was on site.Look at the canvas tents and roadside stands made from branches and twigs, along with homemade signs to attract passersby. Notice the Unionjack flags at the roadside stand (our Maple Leaf flag was not adopted until 1965). One wonders how much traffic would be on Highway 41 south of Kaladar in 1951, to generate sales.Today, blueberry picking south of Kaladar is not the same as it used to be. Berries are much fewer in number. Blueberry stands remain today, particularly on Highway 7, but most of the blueberries are not local.
