説明Mary Lloyd Johnson writes: “On July 20, 1941, the home of Provincial Magistrate Jack L.L. Lloyd and his wife, Grace, burned down when their electric refrigerator exploded. (according to John and Elaine Bolton, it was a propane refrigerator). At the time, both were sitting on the lawn outside the home. There was no fire department or organization at that time, and no firefighting equipment. It was windy. The blaze spread to the row of buildings to the north, which also burned down.To stop the fire from continuing, Mr. Jim Vogan had a home blown up.The home of the Lloyd’s children (all adults) were not home. Their son, Lorne, was on weekend soldier leave from the Army and had driven to the the head of the Mazinaw with girlfriend, Pat Both in his father’s car. Daughter, Vie, was playing the organ at the United Church in Kaladar. Two young ministers were planning to return home for supper. Daughter, Mary, was en route home from Tweed with friends, Mr. and Mrs. George Clarke and their daughter Lois Clarke. Arriving in Northbrook, they saw smoke and the Lloyd home on fire.My parents were devastated, as were all those who had also lost homes, and they were amongst their closest and long-time friends. The barn in the photo is of the neighbour Henry Lloyd (no relation to J.L.L. Lloyd).”Lloyds had only a bit of fire insurance. Most other homeowners had very little or none. Some saved some furniture, dishes, etc, but only tokens. A tragic day, but all rebuilt.Lloyds rented a house across the street from their cousin, Harold Atkins. About 10 years later, son Lorne Lloyd built a combined store, restaurant and home on the site of the former Lloyd home.Other photos in this Flickr collection of the Great Northbrook Fire show furniture from the houses that were in danger of burning, were moved to the west side of Highway 41 (Perry Road).Part of the Mary (Hope) Forbes AlbumNote: Commercial use of this image is prohibited without CDHS permission.
