| 説明 | I am now on a plot of land in eastern Seoul that used to belong to Emperor Sunjong, the final monarch of Korea before the Japanese colonial rule. Here are some stone objects that used to belong here during the imperial days.In the 1920s, with imperial lineage discontinued, these objects were relocated to another plot of imperial land outside city limits, and this area became a golf course.In 1970, President Park Chung-hee acquired this land and turned it into a place for the nation's children to enjoy. The resulting project, Children's Grand Park, opened to the public on May 5th, 1973.May 5th was chosen as the opening date as it is Children's Day in South Korea, a designation first conceived by a children's rights activist during the Japanese colonial rule. And sure enough, Japan also has a Children's Day that also falls on May 5th. |
