| 説明 | It is the last surviving Inn of Chancery. It was designated a Grade I listed building in 1974.The mysterious TPL above the door into the garden is Thomas Leech, Principal of the Inn in 1753.Staple Inn dates from 1585 when it was originally the wool staple, where wool was weighed and taxed, before coming one of the major commercial law centres serving the nearby Royal Courts of Justice in the Strand. It was one of the Inns of Chancery, specialising in commercial law, which eventually fell into decay in the 19th century. The others were dissolved and most were demolished. It is now the last remaining Inn of Chancery. It survived the Great Fire of London, but was extensively damaged by a German V2 rocket in 1944. It was restored after the end of WW2. It has a distinctive timber-framed façade and an internal courtyard. The façade is a reminder of what High Holborn would have looked like before the Great Fire destroyed the other Tudor-style timber frame buildings in the road. The courtyard is similar to those found at the other Inns of Court, such as Gray's Inn with traditional-style office buildings occupied by barristers' chambers and other legal firms. The historic interiors include a great hall, now used by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. |
