説明I thought a few words of context were in order today to go with these pictures…I worked for Sun Microsystems from 1993 until 2016 (it became part of Oracle in 2010).I joined Sunsoft in a small office in High Wycombe in late 1993 and about a year later (I think maybe November 1994) I was working late and read a posting to an internal mailing list called www . It talked about an internal release of something called WebRunner and Oak.I downloaded the tarball onto my SPARCStation (SS-20 I think, may have been a SS-10) and ran it up.That was the first time I saw a tumbling Duke animation and soon after interacted with the molecule demo(see www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qc36yF8Mo-Y#t=23m40s ).At that point in time there was no animation in a browser, just text and static images, let alone interaction (Netscape Navigator 2.0 came out later in 1995 with support for animated gifs). This was interesting.WebRunner and Oak became HotJava and Java in early 1995 and I followed the progress via internal sites on Sun’s amazing SWAN (Sun Wide Area Network) and mailing lists. In May 1995 I attended the SunWorld conference in San Francisco as part of my job as Northern Europe Technical Manager for SunSoft. The highlights were meant to be things like the Netra servers and the Firewall-1 software along with agreements with Netscape. But on 23rd May something called Java stole the show.Of course all things have a gestation period and many people working in Sun and First Person had been working on this since at least 1991 with many concepts going back years before that. But 23rd May 1995 is the official birthday - 30 years ago today I was sitting in Moscone watching it’s coming out party. As I said I left Oracle and the remains of Sun in mid 2016 but I spent over 20 years working with and talking about Java.A few presentations are still here such as this one Simon and I did for the 20th birthday.www.slideshare.net/slideshow/london-java-community-ljc-op...From the early days of Applets, through Jini (which I also found as an internal project way before it appeared) , Java SE, EE and ME, NetBeans and the JDK spending most of my later years focusing on the server side with app servers and cloud infrastructure,It was nice to be in at the beginning and it was nice to see the 30th birthday sessions on YouTube this week.www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHHPbI7sYv8I just thought I would upload a few images from the past to mark some fun years.Happy Birthday Java!
