ShookRemark: School District No. 7 of Center Township, Porter County, Indiana, was known as the Leonard School. Presumably, the photograph on this card is of teacher Josephine M. Groff.The Leonard School was located southwest of the present day intersection of Joliet Road and Tower Road. During the spring of 1928, it was recognized that the school building had several issues and meetings were arranged to discuss a consolidation of the Leonard School with the Hayes School. Bonds were issued in March 1929 to raise funds to construct and a equip a new consolidated school to be named the Hayes-Leonard School.------Josephine May Groff was born May 23, 1870, in Chase, Lake County, Michigan, the daughter of Joseph Henry Groff and Leah (McGurk) Groff. Josephine married Franklin Wesley Sassaman in Porter County, Indiana, on June 7, 1902, and the were the parents of at least three children: Leah Mae (b. 1903), Franklin Wesley (b. 19104), and Verna Pauline (b. 1905). Josephine passed away on May 14, 1933, in Charlotte, Eaton County, Michigan, and is buried in Maple Hill Cemetery located in Charlotte.Sources:George A. Ogle & Company. 1906.
