| 説明 | 96E013 - Steamboat "Delta Queen" at 4th Street wharf, Louisville, Kentucky, Ohio River mile 604, May 8, 1996Looking WNW from wharf near 4th StreetAfter the Kentucky Derby, the "Delta Queen" steamed back to Cincinnati, then began another cruise going down the Ohio River, stopping at Louisville.Here the "Queen" is backing out from the wharf before heading downriver.A crewman has just cast off the lines and is walking up the stage (incorrectly called the gangplank).The steam plume from the port hull is probably from the steam-powered capstan on the foredeck.The steamer "Delta Queen" (documentation # 225875) was built in 1926 by the California Transportation Co. at Stockton, California. In 1947, the "Delta Queen" was brought from California to New Orleans via the Panama Canal and began her well-documented career on the Mississippi River system. The "Queen" has a wooden superstructure (a fire risk) and in order to carry overnight passengers, she received numerous exemptions from the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). In 2008, the exemption was not renewed, so the "Queen" stopped offering cruises. For several years she was a floating hotel at Chattanooga, Tennessee. Her SOLAS exemption was renewed in 2018, but by that time she had been taken to Houma, Louisiana, for restoration, and was apparently still there as of 2024, her fate unknown.
