| 説明 | Another view of the village of Goodleigh in Devon with the church of St Gregory standing high up In essence Goodleigh has changed little since its early beginnings. Arable and dairy farming and grazing land for sheep have been predominant, but apple, and more especially cherry, orchards brought unlikely fame to Goodleigh until the 19th century. In the 16th century, the vast mazzard orchards, with their luscious, black cherries, brought villagers flocking from miles around to enjoy the harvest of fruit and the merrymaking that followed. The high fertility of Goodleigh land, which made its orchards famous, was probably due to the numerous springs which fed the land and also a lake, today no more than a boggy hollow. This lake must have been a boon for the vast majority, though not for the local miscreants who found themselves receiving more than their fair share of its contents, on the end of the ducking stool!www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/guc-refurbishment |
