| 説明 | Church of St. German, Germansweek Devon, a Norman church founded on an earlier settlement, it is built of granite & local volcanic stone rubbleMentioned in the 1086 Domesday Survey as "Wica" It appears as Wyk in 1242 in the Book of Fees, Wyke in 1270 and Wyke Germyn in 1458 in the Feet of Fines. The 'week' element is the Old English 'wic', from the Latin 'vicus', meaning a farm or village. 'Germans' refers to the dedication of the church to St Germanus of Auxerre who visited the South West of England in 429 and 443 and established numerous churches in the region. The building still probably incorporates some 13c fabric with 14c and early 16c additions. It now consists of a nave, chancel, south transept, two stage west tower, north aisle and chapel, and south porch. The low unbuttressed tower with a square stair turret on the north side , is probably the earliest part of the church, the nave, chancel and south transept are likely to date from the 14c . The north aisle was added about early 16c when window stone was renewed . The church was extensively restored in 1870 and again in 1874 paid for by subscription at a cost of £775 when among other improvements the 3 bells were recast , The building was re-roofed with new fittings and windows . The chancel arch was rebuilt and also the porch The rood stairs entrance is in the south transept and incorporates a squint to the main altar but the stairs are blocked higher up. There is a small piscina in north chapel and also one in the transept. Today St German's is a member of the Northmoor Team of Churches in the Okehampton area on the north-west edge of Dartmoor. There is a Sunday service every fortnight to which visitors are welcome. The bells are rung regularly, Derek Harper CCL commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St.German%27s_Church,_Ger... |
