説明 | This small exhibit in the Milwaukee Public Museum is famous in museum history. Known as the Muskrat Habitat Group exhibit, it was created in 1890 by taxidermist Carl Akeley. It is believed to have been fhe world’s first “total habitat” exhibit in a museum, combining preserved or replica animals with a realistic display of their habitat. Before that, taxidermied animals were displayed like items in a store on unadorned shelves, tables or display cases. Carl Akeley’s work revolutionized natural history museum design.Photographed December 2023. |
